Value first — read it before you sign anything

Two real tapes before any ask: the CalPERS PE program book (466 holdings) and a 161-day competition fund tape that refuses to invent NAV — plus the hedge-fund regulations pack.

An emerging manager runs the tape daily: EMS holds working orders, OMS holds the book, payouts models the waterfall. Marks come from the desk or stay honestly absent — a residual is never backed into NAV. LP letters cite the same record counsel reads if a side letter moves.
